Routine Dental Exams and Cleanings
Much like brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once, professional dental care is only effective when you’re consistent with it. That’s why we recommend attending a dental exam and cleaning appointment at least once every six months.
Regular Dental Exams
During a routine dental exam, we’ll carefully check for signs that could indicate the presence of a developing issue such as tooth decay or gum disease. We’ll also look for signs of worn down or damaged tooth structure, imbalances in your bite, and other potential warning signs of trouble. Using digital X-rays and an intraoral camera, we can gain a clear picture of your teeth, gums, and oral structures to ensure a highly accurate examination and diagnosis.
Oral Cancer Screenings
Part of your routine dental examination includes a comprehensive oral cancer screening, during which we’ll specifically check for the telltale signs of oral cancer. These may include lesions, ulcers, discolored areas of your oral tissues, rough patches, sores that bleed and don’t heal, and more. We’ll also consult with you to determine what habits or lifestyle choices may increase your risks of developing oral cancer, such as smoking or chewing tobacco.
In addition to a thorough examination and screening, your routine visits also include professional cleaning of your teeth and gums. Using professional dental equipment, we can carefully and effectively remove all traces of plaque and tartar, which contain oral bacteria that can harm your teeth and gums if left unchecked. While you can brush most plaque from your teeth at home every day, its calcified form, tartar, cannot be removed without professional cleaning.
Scaling and Root Planing
If oral bacteria have formed plaque on the roots of your teeth, underneath your gums, then you may require periodontal cleaning, or scaling and root planing, to effectively clean it away. Scaling and root planing involve carefully accessing your teeth roots and removing plaque and tartar from their surfaces. Then, we’ll smooth the roots’ surfaces to make it less likely that oral bacteria will cling to them until your next visit.
