Sedation to Make Dental Care Comfortable
Some patients experience heightened levels of anxiety, even fear, at the thought of visiting the dentist or receiving dental treatment. In many cases, this anxiety and fear can prevent them from seeking the routine general dental care they need, which leads to the need for more extensive restorative treatment later. With the help of dental sedation, we can help calm your anxiety and fears so you can relax during your visit and give your smile the care that it deserves.
Types of Dental Sedation
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, often referred to as laughing gas, is the most common form of dental sedation we offer. It’s also the mildest and safest sedation option, making it appropriate for patients of all ages. Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask that you wear over your nose, and then exhaled out of your mouth. The effects of the sedation are almost immediate, and will wear off nearly as fast once you remove the mask.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is a pill or liquid medication that you take shortly before your treatment. The medication is more potent than nitrous oxide and takes longer to wear off. Therefore, we’ll advise you to bring a responsible adult with you to drive you home from your appointment. In some cases, we may recommend taking the medication once the night before your treatment and again in the morning.
